Alice in Wonderland 3-Disc Blu-ray combo pack *Giveaway* (Closed)

“Sometimes I believe in as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

—Alice, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland

I am excited to announce the upcoming DVD/Blu-ray release of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s Disney’s Alice In Wonderland, an action-packed story about a young woman who dreams up impossible things to help her escape the conventions of Victorian Society.

headerIt began, as many great adventures do, with a “what if”—what if, screenwriter Linda Woolverton mused, Alice grew up and returned to Wonderland?

From that spark a cinematic phenomenon caught fire.  Woolverton’s re-envisioning of the classic tale is now Disney’s latest big-screen triumph, directed by Tim Burton, and Lewis Carroll’s iconic words about believing in the impossible have been transformed into an exuberant battle cry for anyone staring down a Jabberwocky.

19-year-old Alice Kingsleigh, played by Mia Wasikowska, chafes under the conventions and expectations imposed by Victorian society; she daydreams about men wearing dresses and women wearing trousers, and wonders what it would be like to fly.

“I did a lot of research on the ethics and mores of how young women were expected to behave, and had Alice behave not that way,” Woolverton explains.  “She doesn’t wear stockings.  She doesn’t like them.  I don’t like them either.  The Victorian era was perfect because it was easy to shock.”

But Alice is stopped.  “She doesn’t know who she is.  Other people have determined her path, and presented her with some options.  She looks at the options, and she hesitates.”

“At a certain age, girls in society are pressured to be a certain way,” Woolverton continues.  “They step back from being the smartest one in the class; they start wanting to be attractive to boys.  I always wanted to address this issue in my work.”

“You’re not the same as you were before….you’ve lost your muchness,” the Mad Hatter, played by Johnny Depp, tells Alice.

“Having lost her muchness is having lost knowing who she is,” Woolverton says.  “If you look at the Alice in the books, she’s intrepid, she’s not afraid, not daunted; she’s very different from the Alice we meet at the beginning of the movie.

Woolverton drew on Carroll’s famous poem “Jabberwocky” for inspiration, making it about Alice and deftly causing the poem’s “he” to refer to “she.”  In the film’s climatic scene, as Alice advances on the Jabberwocky, she counts off six impossible things to herself:  “There’s a potion that can make you shrink; a cake that can make you grow; animals can talk; cats can disappear; there’s a place called Wonderland; and I can slay the Jabberwocky.”  “Counting off is the process of working up to achieve her goal.  I get chills every time I see it, read it; when I wrote it,” Woolverton confesses.

Does Woolverton have her own personal list of six impossible things to believe before breakfast?  She laughs.

“This movie is slaying my own personal Jabberwocky,” she admits.  “The fact that’s it’s been embraced by the world is something I can check off the list.  But the challenges are always out there—there’s always a Jabberwocky, it’s always changing, which makes you constantly good—always striving, always working.  My next Jabberwocky is to do it again.”

Does believing in six impossible things before breakfast have a particular relevance for Woolverton as a mother?

“My whole MO with my daughter was to raise her to believe that she can do anything, be anything, accomplish anything she wants.  Everything I’ve ever written is for my daughter.  There are characters in my work that are her.  Alice is for her.  She’s 18 now—but she doesn’t need it.  She’s very strong and confident.”

“This is my dream,” declares Alice.  “I’ll decide where it goes from here.  I make the path.”  It’s the purest expression of what it means to be a protagonist—in a movie, and in life.  “Alice, at last,” says Absalom the caterpillar, as she makes the choice to fight the Jabberwocky.

But isn’t this what life is about?  Aren’t we all dreaming six impossible things before breakfast?

  • That your child, who is still in bed, will get up in time to catch the carpool to school ten minutes from now.
  • That you will finish that project, no matter how many dishes are stacked up in the sink.
  • That you will not only survive whatever life tosses at you, you will thrive.
  • That women can be the protagonist of their own story.
  • That “he” can mean “she.”
  • That, as with Alice at the end of the movie, shipping off to some far port to learn the merchant trading business, the end of one adventure means the beginning of another.  Hello, Absalom, now transformed into a butterfly.  Hello, wisdom.  Hello to our children and ourselves.

Woolverton agrees.  “We’re on the verge of women ruling the world, if we raise our daughters to believe in themselves.”

Have you seen Alice in Wonderland? If so, what did you think about it? We saw it in the theater and I loved it! I am really excited to soon be able to watch the DVD/BluRay combo to see some of the amazing bonus features and behind the scenes that it will have!

I saw Alice on opening night. Loved it! The colors and effects were stunning, especially in 3D. I loved how it differed from the kids’ classic, darker, scarier, and more entertaining for adults. Helena Bonham Carter’s portrayal of the Red Queen was outstanding and hilarious. I also loved Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Johnny can do no wrong, especially when paired with Tim Burton. I loved Alice’s independence and attitude as well. All in all, an awesome movie!

Alice and Wonderland is fantastic I’ve seen the modern version once and the 1951 version several times. The part I find most enjoyable is the symbolism of wonderland and going down the rabbit hole to psychedelics and perception. The subject matter is both realistic to the psychedelic experience and light hearted enough to be fun for the kids. Overall there’s no wrong reason to like this movie, its just a great, and Johnny Depp is always awesome.

I watched Alice in Wonderland in 3-D the day after it came out in theaters. :) I can honestly say I loved everything about the movie. The graphic and effects were phenomenal. I love the variety of colors that went with the scene like the mushroom forest and the White Queen’s castle. I adore Johnny Depp; he did an amazing job as the Mad Hatter! My favorite character though is Chessur the Cheshire Cat! :D He looked so adorable in the movie. I think Mia Wasikowska was perfect in playing Alice. :) By the way, I love the work of Tim Burton! The 3-D effect with the Bandersnatch was awesome along with Absolem when he turned into a butterfly at the end of the movie! :) I’ve been told that I’m obsessed with Alice in Wonderland. Haha. I bought the Alice in Wonderland book based on the motion picture by T.T. Sutherland, and the Alice in Wonderland Visual Guide. I just absolutely love this movie AND would love to own it too! :D I would watch it over and over again. :) :) :yahoo:

Why did I love the new Alice so much? Well, it inspired me. That one tiny line that the White Queen said. “You can not live your life for others.” I had been stuck in my own world. People telling me who to be. And until I heard this- I was planning on being something that would make me miserable. And now, I can really pursue my dreams. And possibly five other things that seemed impossible.

I haven’t seen Alice in Wonderland yet :( but, I can’t wait! I think I’ve been waiting for 47 years for this movie. I read the book way back in 1962, I was 9 & thought Wow! Wouldn’t it be great to see my imagination come to life? I could “just” imagin what Wonderland would be like to visit, talk to the White Rabbit, shrink from the Red Queen & have a Tea party with the Madd Hatter! Now, it’s happened & from all the reviews I’ve seen it’s a movie that can take my imagination deeper down the rabbit hole than I ever could have dreamed!
Besides Johnny Depp is in it & Ann Hathaway & Helena Bohnam Carter…how can you lose with them?

I rarely get out to see movies, but I did get a chance to see this version of Alice In Wonderland. I really enjoy Tim Burton’s movies, and I think Johnny Depp does an awesome job again, in this one. I absolutely loved this movie! It was the first 3d film I’d seen in theaters and the detail they put into it was stunning! Lisa Huang says:

I have seen the movie twice so far. The part of the movie that I enjoy the most is the interpretations and remixes that the creators used in the movie. I loved how they mixed up characters from both Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass to create a whole new plot that really spoke out to audiences of all types. The characters used in the movie also had their roles twisted to make certain characters seem more important, such as the Mad Hatter, or to make certain characters like others, such as the Red Queen resembling the Queen of Hearts. The way the creators interpreted the plot of Lewis Carroll’s works and made it into their own also amazed me and made me love the Alice series even more because of the strength that Alice shows when facing tough situations. ^_^

I have seen it with the whole family and how beautiful it was.. The colors were magnificent!! I had enjoyed seeing the Avatar in 3D but this topped it in my opinion.. YUP you guess it, Johnny Depp.. AWWWW

I loved it! Tim Burton has amazing artistic vision, but his movies almost always fall flat on their faces before the end. This one did not! Everything about it is perfect, the script, the ACTORS!, the editing, the plot, the animation integration… I could go on. My five year old loved it too as it was very “adult” but not inappropriate. Will definitely be buying this one for keeps.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a twitter account, so I am unable to tweet it! But, I can tell you the things that I love about the movie. As far as the acting goes, a great deal of my favorites made appearances in the film. I absolutely adore Stephen Fry and Alan Rickman, as well as other members from the Harry Potter cast that were in it (Helena, Timothy, etc)! Mia did an outstanding job portraying Alice, and I love how empowering her role was to women. She dominated and took control for herself, and proved that woman can be just as victorious as men, often more so. I love how she learned to discover herself and believe in what she thought was right, and I thought it was great at the end how she did her little jig in front of the party guests showing off her sockless legs! I also loved how colorful and fantastic the scenery was in the movie, it was great fun to see it in 3d, and the special effects were very convincing. There were many funny moments in the film, many involving the Cheshire cat and the Hatter, who were both very well played. Johnny Depp did an astounding job bringing out the whimsy of the Hatter, and the effects used to make the cat fly were awesome. The Cheshire cat was (and is) my favorite character, even in the old disney cartoon. All in all, I loved the film and I would be thrilled to win a copy of it! Thank you for reading my response!

I loved Alice in Wonderland! I saw it in IMAX 3-D and it was amazing! Johnny Depp was splendidly entertaining. I think my jaw was on the ground the entire time! I can’t wait to own a copy (or win one) to treasure forever. I think Tim Burton & Johnny Depp are delightful together. :yahoo:

I saw Alice in Wonderland opening weekend and LOVED it. I was always a fan of Alice in Wonderland ever since I was a little girl, and I am an even bigger fan of Tim Burton. I love everything he does, especially when Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are involved. My favorite part of the movie was the tea party towards the beginning when Alice is shoved in the tea-pot, I also liked that this version was a little more “grown up” for us who enjoyed the Disney version as kids, and can now enjoy this Tim Burton version as adults.
