In our home, we have been more active recently than we have been in a while. I had surgery a couple of months ago that made me bedridden for a good month so it’s been a challenging time getting back to normal with myself, and the family back in a daily routine. As part of my physical therapy, we love taking walks, going to the park, and staying as active as we can. An active family makes for a happy family. For me, getting ‘back to me’, I feel better when I eat right and when I exercise. There’s just something about getting up and going for a run to start the day off on a positive note. The kids feel better when we keep our family in a routine, such as eating right and daily activities. With us living in the Midwest, we don’t get year round warm weather, so any time that the sun is shining and the temp allows, we jump at the chance to enjoy it.
With our changed active lifestyles comes eating healthier. The kids love to pick out their own fruits and vegetables at the store and they love helping make our family meals. Being together is the best part, but when you can incorporate healthy eating makes it that much better.
While not all kids have the ability to have the ability to learn how to eat right and remain active, I am thankful for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Here in Iowa, the BGCA have teamed up with Amerigroup Foundation and The Coca-Cola Company to create Triple Play, a leading comprehensive health and wellness program that serves young people at Boys & Girls Clubs, giving them the tools and awareness necessary to put them on the path to a great future. Their national support makes it possible for Boys & Girls Clubs around the country to operate Triple Play.
Our family mission is to spend more quality time together, spend more time outside and go on more active family outings like fishing and camping. What is your family goal this year?
