When something or someone makes an impact on your life, that person that inspires you… that sticks with you forever doesn’t it? I have had friends all of my life that I have known all of my life. Example: I am 33 and I still have friends from my kindergarten class. I am still friends with my high school ‘girl group’ that I hung out with. We all still keep in touch and still are all very much the best of friends.
The internet is a powerful tool. Not only for blogs, forums, online searches, researching gadgets, but it is a meeting place. The internet is a place to make new friends, venture out there in the world where we may not be able to go to in person. The internet can be your ‘therapy’ or go to place when you need people to talk to.
A few years back, I joined a fertility website where thousands of women were on there trying to conceive, had just had a baby and needed post partum advice and some were even adopting. So many stories, so many fabulous friends I met. There was one friend that I knew for a while, but we didn’t really get close until 2005, when I was pregnant with Kambry. By this time, we were ventured to another forum with all the girls from one sector of this fertility board. This private forum still exists to this day and our friendships still continue. Who would have thought that I would have made one of the best friends of my life from some online message board? Shortly after Kambry was born, I flew to meet this ‘online friend’. It was like we knew each other, more than just online. It was like we were neighbors. It was more like sisters. Not only did we have small kids that were pretty close in age, we both almost shared a birthday. We had the same likes – the same dislikes; for the most part.
This friend’s name is Laurie. Laurie has given me the smiles to last an eternity, the love to last a lifetime and the inspiration to last beyond that. Not only has Laurie filled that void in my life from not really having anyone in my own town to talk to (very small town – we don’t get out much), Laurie is there any time I need through messenger, text messages, comments on my blog, through two forums we are both a part of and so much more. If I send a smoke signal from 600 miles away – it seems as if she sees it.
I may not have been the best friend the past couple of months to you, Laurie, and I apologize. It seems as if I let things get in the way of that smoke, but the smoke signal is and will always remain there. Laurie is like my big sister. You know – the big sister that knocks you on the back of the head to make your brain jiggle some sense in to itself? There are things about friendship that come ‘natural’ to everyone. It’s those special moments like making shrinky dinks together that truly make those memories stick forever. Yes, we made shrinky dink keychains like we were in the 6th grade. How fun is that? Laurie has taught me so much about life and friendship.
Thank you for being my ‘sister’. Thank you for teaching me the meaning of friendship. Thank you for being you. Thank you, Laurie. I love you girl! See you next week!

I am 54. I have a few friends still from HS and other friends I have know for almost as long. I have lived in different states and the internet is how we keep in touch. I love and treasure each and everyone of the friends I have been blessed to have in my life. And enjoy meeting and making new friends daily.

If I were on the receiving end of that, I would be so touched…. I was in tears and I don’t know either of you… I’ve only been following you for a couple of months. What a beautiful story.

Very beautiful!
If not for the internet, I wouldn’t be here. Seriously, the people that I have met because of it are like my family. They keep me going even when I don’t want to.
