What are your plans for this Labor Day extended holiday weekend? Well, I’d love to be grilling it up at some friends’ house, but the kidlets and I are going to be at home while daddy goes to a Fantasy Football draft weekend. What will he be taking with him for snacks for his yearly fun event? Nothing other than Frito Lay and some yummy homemade dip that we will be making beforehand. Who can deny chips, snacks, dip and of course – Frito Lay?
Whether you are on a diet or not, here are some recipes that my family and I will be trying out soon and I encourage you to test these out for yourself:
No party is complete without chips and dips. When choosing chips for the party, it’s important to turn the bag around and read the nutrition label.
Here’s what you’ll find out about America’s favorite chips:
- Tostitos Scoops! tortilla chips are made with just three simple ingredients – corn, vegetable oil and salt – and have 8 grams of whole grains per serving. Another fun fact: they have less sodium than a slice of bread!
- Lay’s Original potato chips are also made with just three ingredients – potatoes, vegetable oil and salt – that’s it!
- SunChips Original Multigrain snacks are always a fun alternative that pack 18 grams of whole grains into ever serving!
Chips can be a vehicle to deliver more nutrition into the diet when paired with fruit and veggie dips. To add even more nutritious goodness to your chips, check out these three recipes from Registered Dietitian Jessica Levinson – all made with fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Watermelon Salsa (Perfect with Lay’s Classic Potato Chips)
Serves: 6; Serving Size: ½ cup
Ingredients:
- 3 cups finely diced seedless watermelon
- 1 to 2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced (use the seeds to add spice)
- ¼ cup chopped cilantro
- ¼ cup minced red onion
- ¼ cup lime juice
- Kosher salt to taste
Directions:
- In a medium bowl, combine the watermelon, jalapeno peppers, cilantro, onion, and lime juice. Season with salt and stir everything together.
- Serve immediately or chill for at least an hour.
Nutrition Information (per ½ cup serving):

Corn and Heirloom Tomato Salsa (Perfect with Tostitos Scoops! Tortilla Chips)
Serves: 8; Serving Size: ½ cup
Ingredients:
- Extra-virgin olive oil
- 2 ears of corn
- 1 to 1 ½ cups cherry heirloom tomatoes, halved
- 1/3 cup minced red onions
- 1 teaspoon minced and seeded jalapeno peppers (use the seeds to add spice)
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
- 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
- Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Directions:
- Lightly brush olive oil on the ears of corn. Grill the corn on all sides for about 2 minutes on all sides. (If you don’t have a grill, you can “grill” the corn over a stove’s flame – just be sure to hold the corn with tongs.) Remove the corn and set aside to cool.
- Once corn is cool enough to touch, use a paring knife to cut kernels off cob into a medium bowl. Be sure to cut very close to the cob to use as much corn as possible. Add the remaining ingredients to the bowl and toss to combine.
Nutrition Information (per ½ cup serving):

Cucumber Yogurt Dip
Serves: 8; Serving Size: ¼ cup
Ingredients:
- 1 English cucumber, peeled, halved lengthwise, and seeded
- 1 ½ cups nonfat Greek yogurt
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
- 1 to 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
- Cumin to taste
Directions:
- Grate cucumber halves by hand or chop in a food processor until coarse, but not mushy. Place grated/chopped cucumber in a strainer and cover with a paper towel to squeeze out the excess juice. You may need to change the paper towel a few times.
- In a medium bowl, combine the yogurt, chives, garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil. Fold in the cucumber and season with salt and pepper. Add cumin to taste.
- Refrigerate until chilled, about an hour.

Spread softened cream cheese in pie plate

Top w/cheddar cheese

I love the Funyuns Flamin Hot Onion Flavored Rings.
Cheetos makes the day brighter and really tastier. I was on a camping trip when it poured and the food was ruined. The bags of Cheetos were the only food left edible. Cheetos saved the day and I had always been a fan of Cheetos, but now I am the Number #1 fan.
