What to get dad? How about the HP MediaSmart Server LX195?

untitled1Those that know me know that I take a lot of pictures and videos. When I say a lot.. I say that lightly. I take a LOT! I have backed them up on DVD’s, CD’s, flash drives, external hard drives – you name it, I have tried it. I have thought about getting a server to host my pictures, videos, music and even my website, but the prices I have seen kind of scared me. Well, not only that, but the set up didn’t appeal to me either. I recently came across a server from HP that I am very excited about; not only on the price affordability aspect, but the space is wowza amazing! Yes, I said it – wowza.

Do you have a lot of pictures of your loved ones? How about videos? Music for your MP3?  I can go on and on and on! How would you like to be able to save these things from your house, or while on the go?Think of all the photos and songs you’ve collected over the years –what if your hard drive crashed and you lost all of it? The MediaSmart Server LX195 acts as a digital safe, offering storage and protection for all your digital treasures including photos, songs and videos.

The HP MediaSmart Server LX195 automatically backs up, stores and accesses content from all Macs and PCs on your home network and lets Dad remotely stream music and photos to his computer, keeping him connected to his digital media no matter where in the world he may be. What? From all computer PC’s and Mac’s? What? I have done some research on the HP MediaSmart Server LX195 and I am utterly giddy (yes, I said it) about this machine! I love technology and to know that a piece of technology can actually help?

  1. You can’t imagine how much this would help us in our everyday life. We rely significantly on our computer every day of the year. We are always in fear of a computer crash due to to0 many photos and other folder/files being stored on it, and the photos stored on discs is a hindrance and slows down the work we do. Because of that, one thing the HP MediaSmart Server LX195 would do for us is store in one place all of the photos we need access to in once place and without the worry of to much stored and causing a crash since it holds up to 168,000 photos. My computer is my source of income because I work from home due to a visual impairment that occurred in my 20’s. I also travel back and forth 1500 miles every six weeks to see an eye specialist for treatment. Yet another reason we could use one of these devices something fierce. I use my computer for contact with the specialist, to plan the trips to get the care and to have a laptop with me to handle everything when I am away from home. So the features of accessing our media4 anywhere with an Internet-connected computer, Stream music and photos to any computer, while at home or away, Publishing photos to photo-sharing and social networking Web sites—Snapfish, Flickr, Picasa, and even Facebook6—via any Internet-connected computer, or share directly from our server and the Easy setup, scheduling, and support are things that would be so valuable to us.

We need this so badly. Thanks for the chance to win one. Most of our money is wrapped up in getting me the medical care I need, and the trips to get the treatment are also supported through our local Lions Club and other donations.

In answering your question, all the above is how this would help us in our everyday lives. Sorry it’s so long.

  6. This baby would help me to keep all our pictures in one central location. We each have a camera phone which we take pics with and we all put our pics on our own computer but it would be nice to have them central

my dad has really gotten the tech bug since he retired. so he not only has a bunch of stuff that could be backed up and stored, but he’s learning about how to set up networks and stuff (its even over my head). so i think he would love it. thanks for the chance!

  8. I like that it will automatically backup, thanks for the giveaway.

  9. I think this would be great! For my dad… My parents just had their 6 year old laptop take a dive and bought a new one. Luckily it was bad memory so they now have 2 laptops. For Xmas, we set them up with a wireless network. This will help them keep both computers backed up as well as let them share files.

  10. My husband downloads a lot of music and I take a lot of digital photos. Storage capacity is a huge need for us!!

  17. My husband would love this. He loves to take pictures and would love the large storage. He would also love the fact that he could access the pictures when he is out of town at work. Plus he could even listen to his favorite tunes away from home. :-)

  18. 2 plus people’s worth on music and other media? This would be great for simplifying and centralizing everything.

This would help our family so much and especially my husband since he is usually the one who takes care of all of the backing up, phots, etc. This product would streamline things so much for us and simplify our life. We have PC and Mac computers and being able to back both of them with one product would be a plus. We have lost photos and documents on our computers before and it was very stressful.

  21. We take a lot of pictures and I’m always worried about losing them. Uploading them all online takes a lot of time and work so the automatic backing up would be very helpful.

  22. My husband can’t keep up with me fast enough for backing up the photos I save on our computer. He’s very technology oriented, but can’t afford anything this nice. I’m sure it would be a very welcome gift in our house.

  23. My dad is an artist and photographer. He is constantly taking photos and forever running out of storage. I maintain my dad’s website and a few others, and I am always running out of storage as well. The HP Media Smart server would be a huge help for both of us. Thank you for the chance to win.

I like the idea of being able to back up the files on all the computers in our home on the server, especially since each computer has different types of important files located on them.

  26. We have been collecting family pictures, music and scan of family documents on our two desktops and one laptop. This would be a wonderful way to finally have an easy way to ensure that all of those important files were backup on a regular basis.

We still haven’t purchased a back-up system; all I have are a few DVD’s that I burned of some of the data. My favorite feature is it does its backups automatically.

I love that this can store up to 168,000 photos, 147,000 songs or 405 hours of video. Having that much storage storage capacity in one place would be a Godsend, and would simplify our lives greatly. Currently we have photos all over the place, music stored on CDs, records, cassettes and a laptop and videos scattered and stored away. Having a machine with this storage capability would allow us (the hubby and me) to condense all the treasured mementos, that make up our lives, into one place. Fabulous.

  61. David Gresh says:

We have three computers at home If we want to share photos or music we have to load flash drives and transfer the data. The LX195 would eliminate that hassle. I really like the automatic backup feature, no more lost photos.

We were given a video camera when our son was born two months ago, and my husband has recorded all kinds of footage. 72. Jillian V says:

this would be great around the house, my husband is usually on the computer for work and this specific computer would help me with my art major

  73. This would definitely help me keep my videos and photos organized and available for anyone I deem fit to see them. It would also be great to keep my ripped DVDs (I have a ton!) It would also be great to log into the WHS from anywhere when I travel–which is a lot!

  78. Shirley Hodge says:

my son offered me a very handsome wood box inside of which were upwards of 500 or more attached envelopes/slides to store photographs. Unfortunately if I had prints made of all my digital photos to put in the box I would not only need an extra room to store them all I would be on the way to the poorhouse. This would be just the thing to not only store my photos but to save my sanity and open up a bed in the poorhouse.

  79. Michael Spencer says:

This device allows automatic back up of your media and allows for multiple computers to access the same music, pictures etc.

  88. I have about filled my drive!! Too much music and pictures, I could really use this to help me get organized and backed up. My external is dangerously close to full also.

  100. Having a media server would be a great way to centralize everything, as we have a ton of music and photos and videos (thanks to a very creative 10-year-old!) Our current computer does not have enough space to hold everything, so we have a variety of burned CDs/DVDs, memory sticks and external hard drives to back everything up. Our Vista computer also tends to crash a lot, so it worries me that our files will get corrupted or lost somehow. It would be so convenient to have everything in one spot, separate from the main computer.

  105. My husband would love to have this to back up photos and videos that we’ll be taking of our baby due in Dec.

  106. This would definitely simplify my life by cleaning up the clutter near our computer!!! We have cd’s, dvd’s, memory cards, etc. all storing digital media at the moment. This would allow it all to be stored in one place! No more clutter! Also, the digital media that isn’t on the cd’s, dvd’s, memory cards, etc. are sitting on our computer hard drive and are in danger of being lost if ever we had a virus or computer crash. This would alleviate those concerns too. Awesome.

I am tired of researching-there is so much info out there, it’s impossible to sort it all out! This would be a godsend because I wouldn’t have to worry about it anymore! I like that it’s automatic-sounds like you set it up once & it does the rest. Very important! Plus the ability to access your entire computer from anywhere on the ‘net is AWESOME! 126. This sounds like it would be a great addition to our home network. One of the problems that we are having is that some photos are on my husband’s laptop, and some are on ours. We end up with disorganized photos and music and unnecessary multiple copies that take up extra memory. I love the idea that we could access the server when we are traveling. It sounds like a great way to download and protect your vacation photos while you are still on vacation. Send them home to the server, and if you lose your memory card or your computer is damaged, you still have the photos!

  131. I would really enjoy a server. Being a high school basketball coach, I film all our games as well as some other games from teams throughout our league for scouting. These videos get quite big and have forced me to get 2 external harddrives to handle all the videos. I see this as eliminating some of my hardware and giving me enough storage place for my media.

  132. C McCarty says:

This would help my husband get organized and stop him from deleting my data when he reloads his pc

  133. Greg Lewis says:

This would be great for backups and streaming video.

  134. This would be great for me to put my photos and music on. I like that it does the automatic backup and that it is easy to use… which for my dad is a necessity!

  135. Gordon Currie says:

We have 3 laptops and 4 desktops in the house, 2 portable media players, close to a thousand movies and CDs. My interest is in a) backup b) centralization of important data and media, and c) streaming media throughout the house instead of hunting for that missing CD or DVD!

  136. This would really help my family as we just have a laptop that is not baby friendly. Not only could my child use the HP Media Smart server for his kid stuff but my husband could store all his music on it. He loves every kind of music you can think of, he has over 1700 songs currently and he is always getting more. For myself I would like to use the computer for family videos and transferring to a dvd so i can share it with family and friends.

My dad is all about technology. He has 4 computers and uses each one for something specific. One for surfing the net, one for games, etc. This would help him keep everything in one spot.

    could get more organized

  145. This would be great because I am a parent of a teenager, work full time five states away and attend university full time. I will use the HP MediaSmart Server LX195 to host the GB’s of photos so that my Dad (and other family members) can view photo’s of his grandson/cousin/nephew, host my class projects I start in MI and complete in VA, stream our 1000’s of songs (30 years of CD’s MP3d last summer). -SAB

I have 3 computers at home. This would allow me to centralize all my files and make backups a simple process.

  147. Shelley Mitchell says:

My hubby is a realtor. He could really use this for all of his virtual tours!!

  148. Richard Adams says:

Dad uses many little drives he’s collected over the years. This is a chance to put everything in one spot.

  149. I would love to win this!

  150. I would love to have a central place to store all my files. But really would be good for streaming my movies over the network.

  151. Kenneth A says:

This is what I really need. I have lots of video and pics. I hope I win this.

  152. Nanette Olson says:

I would like to use it to back up my photos.

The HP MediaSmart Server LX195 would be a huge boost to my father who is constantly taking pictures, but doesn’t know where to store them. Whenever I come over for a visit, he’s always scavaging through 15-20 folders looking for the last photos he took. Plus the automatic backup feature would really keep things safe and sound for him.

  156. Addrienne Mertens says:

my dad is a computer geek, this would replace the homemsde version he has running now. he deserves a real one for all his hard work.

  157. Michael Capp says:

Each person in my household presently has a computer. A centralized location to backup all of these computers, including photos and music, would be wonderful!

  158. I tweeted this giveaway today :)http://twitter.com/evyready

  161. This would be absolutely GREAT in my home. With 4 computers, 4 kids and husband with a photography hobby this would be awesome. We love our pictures , our movies and we could definately use the extra memory space
and so fast (1GB DDR2 DRAM ), for sure. We take pictures daily at our home so this would be fantastic. I also like that it will back up all computers in the house so that too is very important since there are at least 5 of us on the computers at some point daily. lil_lolas@hotmail.com

  162. The LX195 can backup every computer in your house (including Macs) and gives you a central place to store music, photos and more! Dad will LOVE it!

I really need to back up all photos I took of my daughter. They are on the laptop right now and if the thing decides to stop working, I’m doomed.

  166. Julie Nusbaum says:

We have computers all over the house. We regularly have 3 of them plus another connecting the XBOX to the internet) and I would love to route them all through a server instead of through my computer. This would speed up my system and help protect us all from viruses and Trojans. I don’t think my kids are as careful about keeping their anti-malware up to date and my husband hates to do it because he is used to having a server at work that takes care of it for him. With our home network, I’d feel a lot safer with a server and it would be a lot easier to file share than what we have now.
    Thanks for the giveaway.

  167. I can tell you how WHS has made things easier for me. I setup my PC to automagically copy all my photos, music, videos, and documents to my WHS on a daily basis while I’m not around. Now, when I’m away from home, all I have to do is access my WHS over the internet and voila – I can listen to my own music, upload new photos or view old ones, or retrieve documents that I’ve left behind. It’s wonderful. Heck, I’ve even given my daughter a login so she can upload photos of the grandchildren directly to my server for me to enjoy… no more waiting for a visit to see the pix. I love it!

  168. Ann Fantom says:

Wow, this is an awesome way to back up our computers. My geek husband would love this. Please enter me in your giveaway.

  169. This is the ultimate gift to my daughters (and to me) :-)
No more copying music, photos and videos to all the laptops, but set it up centralized for the girls…. They gonna love it !!!
    Please pick me……

I just walked by my wifes PC and saw this, wow do I need this or what. This would solve my problems and I’d have more time to do other stuff instead of being stuck in front of the computer making picture backups on DVD or CD or re-installing everything after a disk crash…

    thank you

  171. Cynthia C says:

This would help with data backup and photo storage. It would help by giving us peace of mind that family memories will be preserved. Thanks!

We also take lots of pictures and this help to save them for us. We recently got a virus in our computer and had to dump everything. We lost a lot of photos that can’t be replaced and we’re so upset about this. This HP MediaSmart will help us prevent this every happening again.
Thanks so much for offering this really wonderful and amazing prize!

  174. Carrie Yard says:

This would help my husband be organized and would stop him from deleting my data when he reloads his pc. Plus I think it looks neat and he would use it.

  175. georgie says:

oh this is Swell! This would help me not ever lose my precious memories of movies and music that I hold dear to my heart and that’s how it would help dad and I and that’s what I so love about it, Very Groovy!

  176. I already have self-built Windows Home Server and now want to get one for my parents. This would be a great start if I’d win one! :)

  177. Marilyn Wons says:

seriously I need to get my computer organized- if i died someone would say wtf is going on here-and need to backup my work- although totally disorganized i indeed can find but need to get a hold of the organizational factors

  180. The HP MediaSmart Server LX195 will help me save all my kids tv shows in a centralized location. That way, they can watch their recorded shows, videos, music, etc.. throughout the house, and leave the big TV to Daddy to watch whatever he can. There’s only so much Hannah Montana a Dad can take, okay? Great site!

  181. Well, I’m the dad, and this would definitely help me keep our family videos and photos organized and available for my wife and my two boys. It would also be a great place to keep my ripped DVDs (I can’t tell you how many DVDs have ended up in the trash after my boys’ got ahold of them!) and then my boys can watch them from their Media Center! One last thing – when I’m deployed to another base (I’m in the Air Force), it would be great to log into the WHS and upload pictures and videos of me for my sons to see!

  182. I would use it as a video recorded for my husband. We don’t have a dvr. My husband works weird hours and I can record his shows.

  185. The HP MediaSmart Server LX195 would so simplify my life. I have media on various computers, especially mp3s and digital photos. Having them centralized (and especially, backed up) would make it so convenient to access and organize them.
