I wore braces, but not as a teenager. I was 20 when I had braces; and boy – did I need them! I was not keen on the idea of the traditional ‘silver braces’ that are out there, so I had clear porcelain braces. This was fine for my age, but when you are a teenager, you really don’t want thick braces that stick out. I know how teenagers think… “What about Senior pictures? I don’t want my braces to show up!” Well, guess what? There is a product that is FABULOUS and every teen that is about to undergo braces will be very excited to learn about Invisalign. This, literally, looks like the ‘after retainer’ that I had once my braces were off. It is basically a clear mouth piece that cannot really be seen. I think it’s ‘cool’. Am I allowed to say that? Well, too bad! I said it anyway. It’s cool!
The new Invisalign Teen™ system straightens your teeth with custom-made clear aligners that are comfortable and practically invisible. It was developed with leading orthodontists. And it works – one million patients worldwide have made Invisalign their clear choice. See, lots of good reasons to smile.
What I found neat about the Invisalign is that there is a blue ‘dot’ (if you want to call it that) on the outside that guestimates the wear. Guess what mom? No more “Are you wearing your Invisalign?” Now they will be able to be ‘told on’ when they aren’t wearing their mouthpiece. I love it!
You may have heard of Invisalign, basically a clear alternative to braces, they recently launched a new product called Invisalign Teen (www.invisalignteen.com), that is relatively the same product specifically designed for active teens/pre-teens. The beauty of the Invisalign Teen product is that the dreaded metal braces process that we remember as kids (painful hours in the orthodontist chair, getting food stuck in the brackets, being called brace face) is now a thing of the past. And parents can spare their kids some of the embarrassment, discomfort and self-image pitfalls that can occur during this phase of their lives with this new clear alternative as well.
Developed by leading orthodontists specifically for teens & pre-teens, Invisalign Teen is the nearly invisible way to effectively straighten teeth. This means that your teen won’t have to feel self-conscious during treatment and it won’t interfere with their active lifestyles.- Invisalign Teen uses a series of clear plastic aligners to straighten teeth. Since Invisalign Teen is removable, teens can maintain healthy oral hygiene during treatment. A cool feature even helps moms gauge whether their teen is wearing them as much as they should be.
- With a cost comparable to traditional braces and features specifically designed to meet the needs of teens, Invisalign Teen is a great alternative to “metal mouth.”
- Invisalign Teen utilizes an advanced 3D imaging technology which involves taking a set of images at the beginning of treatment to determine the best treatment plan, then documenting the progression of movement through the end result. What’s really cool about this process is that once in treatment, the progress of teeth movement is monitored online so at each appointment, patients can actually see how close they are to achieving the end result. Not only do these clear aligners reduce installation time, but they require fewer visits for adjustments and in many cases, shorter treatment time.
- This is also relevant even for moms with younger children because the American Association of Orthodontists (http://www.braces.org) recommends that all children have a orthodontic check up no later than age 7, as some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if treated early instead of waiting until the permanent teeth have come in. Pre-teens can also be candidates for Invisalign Teen due to unique “eruption tabs” built into the aligner to accommodate molars that have not yet come in.
If you see that your teen will need braces, I highly encourage you to check out Invisalign. I am very fascinated with the overall concept, product and .. well, everything about Invisalign. For more information, please visit www.invisalignteen.com

My teenage daughter has had invisalign for about a year. What a nightmare!! Why did I agree to torture myself ? It has been a constant source of discord in our house. She only wears her aligners when I remind her! She is constantly “forgetting” them. She begged for Invisalign instead of traditional braces and swore that she would wear them at all times. Against my better judgement, I caved. Huge mistake! Now, we are months behind where we should be and the orthodontist has said that maybe we should just give up if she isn’t going to be better about wearing them. I was horrified. Did I pay all this money for nothing? My advise, put your kids in regular braces!!!

@susan, This sounds to me like your daughter was too young to have this type of braces. With this type, comes responsibility. I wore regular braces, clear ones, when I was 19 and they were great for me. IMO, I think this is more for adults that are looking to hide their braces.
