Fun learning with JAKKS The Discovery Kids Smart Scanopedia & Animals

When it comes to toys for the kids, I really like those learning toys that are more than just another dust collector in our home. Tucker loves the Scanopedia from JAKKS Pacific!

JAKKS Pacific plans to expand the Discovery Kids® line for Fall 2009 and introduce exciting new items designed to inspire children to be creative and have fun while learning about animals, nature, science and technology, just like the Discovery Kids Network. New items such as the Discovery Kids Smart Animals Eco-Systems™, Discovery Kids Yuck Bugs!™ and Discover Kids Safari Scope™ provide hours of fun and entertainment for kids, but are also innovative, educational and value-driven, which parents love.

The Discovery Kids Smart Animals™ line is an interactive way for kids to learn about their favorite animals and bring them to life by activating animal sound effects, unlocking fun facts and asking interesting quiz questions. Each figure features a Discovery Kids logo that can be scanned by the Smart Animals Scanopedia™, an electronic talking encyclopedia that unlocks information and sound effects for that animal. The handheld Smart Animal Scanopedia scanner has a fun new look for 2009 and holds over 2500 sound effects, facts and quizzes for over 200 animals and includes a bonus poster full of scannable images, interactive maps and games. Discovery Kids Smart Animals and Scanopedia products were nominated for Educational Toy of the Year and named a Toy Wishes “All Star” in 2008. Ages 3+, Suggested Retail Price $29.99 for Scanopedia; Ages 3+, Suggested Retail Price $4.99 – $12.99 for Smart Animal figure packs sold separately.

Here is a video of the Scanopedia in action:

scan1From a parents’ stand point, I love the Scanopedia! The map is a large paper map that we have hung on the wall. The kids can see the map and interact with it with the Smart Animals Scanopedia. I like it because there aren’t a ton of tiny pieces that will get lost. There are animals that you can purchase separately to add on to the set. I love watching both of the kids interact with the Scanopedia. While Kambry may be too young for it, it is a lot of fun seeing her with it and listening to her mimic the animal sounds.

Do we recommend the Scanopedia? Absolutely! I think this is a great holiday gift and is a great idea for that little one that may ‘have everything’!
