I am utterly excited about this next newbie from Kodak! When I read about the new KODAK Zi6 Pocket Video Camera, I had to test this bad boy out! I have tried other USB pocket video cameras, but for some reason, with the format of the way they recorded the movies, I was not able to use them in my Adobe Premiere Elements video creation software. With the Zi6, I am able to record, plug in via USB and my software recognizes the format. Very impressive and made me so happy to know that I didn’t have to convert the movie just to create a movie (if that makes sense).

Here are some of my personal thoughts on the Kodak Zi6:

  • The batteries are rechargeable with an external/extra rechargeable battery charger. They are 2 regular AA Kodak rechargeable batteries and the kit includes the batteries and the wall charger. Other USB type Pocket Video Cameras are charged via USB with no loose batteries. There are some USB Video Cameras that have no batteries to remove; they plug in and charge via USB. The fact that Kodak, so far, is the only company that offers AA rechargable batteries bothers me none whatsoever.
  • I read some reviews about the quality of the KODAK Zi6 and they were not at all what I had expected. From the videos that I took today, the quality is very nice. Yes, comparable to the Flip Mino, as well as the Vado, but very nice quality. Just what I would expect from a Kodak product.
  • The Zi6 is heavier than the Flip and Vado, but not by much. It still fits in the palm of my hands and still fits great in a pant pocket, coat pocket, purse, diaper bag or anywhere!
  • The screen is amazing! I love the screen. BIG! Very clear and the screen is amazing in color and great to play your videos back on. The Zi6 screen is 2.4 inches, where the others are right around an inch. Big difference. The others I have seen are 1.5 and 1 inch. (You can see from my images below what difference we are talking about here)
  • The use of the Kodak Zi6 was very easy! The middle button is like that on a BlackBerry. Push and navigate your way to your video. Play and stop buttons are just to each side of the joystick.
  • When you play back, there is the option to speed up or slow down your video.
  • You have an option (side of the Zi6) to switch your frame to close up or Normal.
  • The Zi6 has 128 MB of internal memory. This is a pretty large memory span, BUT it also has the option to insert an SD memory card. This is what most of us have for our digital cameras, so no worrying with having to purchase an additional memory card.
  • Editing software is included, but is not needed to view the videos.
  • You can plug in the Zi6 to your HDTV and guess what? It’s in HD! I cannot do that with the others.

Here are some comparisons for size for the Vado, The Flip and the Kodak Zi6. I thought it was best to compare each Pocket Video Camera since a lot of readers out there are familiar with each. Even my mind was curious as to the names of each, and when I heard about the Kodak Zi6, I will be honest… I was intrigued (for the lack of a better word), yet I ended up impressed.

My only suggestion for the Kodak Zi6 is:

  • When the folder is open on your computer, from the Zi6, I wish there was a JPEG image of the video so that you can get a quick view of the video.

Small request, but definitely not a complaint!

You can see a video that I created for this post. I had low light in my house and the Zi6 was on a tripod and I feel the video came out quite nice. Some of the video was done while holding with one hand and typing with the other and the image quality was still good.

Here is a video (longer one from the Zi6) to show you what the video looks like. Pardon the package mess, as we were going through boxes and sorting through things.

Mother’s onion… the Kodak Zi6 is great! The cost is under $200.00 and hey – it’s Kodak, so you know it will be good! With the videos reviews that I do here on Mommy Goggles, the Kodak Zi6 would be a perfect fit! Set up my itty bitty tripod (yes, the one I use for blogging is like 4 inches tall.) on my desk, screw in the Zi6, push the record joystick and walah – Vlog! I do a lot of videos of the kids as well and just from the few hours of getting familiar with the Zi6, I am impressed.

Kodak… You had me at hello!
