I cannot tell you how much milk we go through in a week. I would have to say at least 4-5 gallons a week. The kids, well, we all do, love milk! If you havent heard, June is Dairy Month and I have teamed up with the Midwest Dairy Council to help give you some healthy information about milk, the benefits of dairy, and how dairy products can benefit families – not only nutritionally, but for families who are on a budget.
DId you know:
- Milk packs nine essential nutrients at only 25 cents per glass. Many designer drinks, sodas and fruit drinks are high in calories and expensive, which won’t help one’s wallet or waistline.
- Though protein is one of the most expensive parts of the diet, dairy foods are one of the most economical sources of protein and calcium, both of which are important for the growth and development of strong bones and teeth.
- A one-ounce serving of hard cheese, like cheddar, contains 8 grams of protein, and an eight-ounce serving of yogurt provides nearly a third of your suggested daily calcium intake.
These are just a few of the facts from http://www.dairymakessense.com/. I found the website very helpful and full of information that I had no idea about! There are so many nutrition value tips, information, as well as a number of recipes. There are also shopping tips and a link to ask a registered dietitian any nutrition related questions.

I learned that a single serving of dairy contains nine key nutrients deemed essential to good health: calcium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin B12, riboflavin, niacin. We go through ALOT of dairy products in our house; it’s great to know that nutritionally it’s a good idea.
It takes 3 cups of cooked broccoli to equal the calcium in 1 cup of milk, which has me a bit concerned because my daughter is lactose intolerant and we just CANNOT eat that much broccoli!
Thanks!
I learned to my amazement that milk reduces high blood pressure and reduces the risk of certain cancers.

Dairy products provide four of the seven nutrients that Americans miss the most. Thats pretty awesome when you think about it. We drink a ton of milk in our family with 6 of us we easily go through 5litres of milk easily a day.
I learned that the economic downturn has impacted the nation’s dairy farms in a dramatic way. In the first few months of 2009, the price farmers receive for milk declined by about 50%. Today, it costs dairy farmers almost twice as much to produce a gallon of milk as they are getting paid.
