Everybody’s Nuts for Pistachios! *Review & Yummy Giveaway!*

We snack a lot in our home, but we do not buy sweet and fattening snacks. Well, I do from time to time buy cookies, but don’t tell hubby; he’s been trying to figure out if/where I hide things. I have to hide snacks (sweet or healthy!) because hubby will come in and snag everything in one inhale. Why do men do that?

What? You can have a snack that is yummy and good for you? We love, and I believe the word is addicted to, pistachios. Did you know that one of the oldest flowering nut trees, humans have eaten pistachio nuts for at least 9,000 years?

Healing Powers

  • Take a Pistachio and Call Me in the Morning. An old folk remedy, pistachios were once thought to cure to ailments such as toothaches and sclerosis of the liver.
  • Tastes Better, Too. A one-ounce serving of pistachios scores higher on the USDA’s antioxidant scorecard than a cup of green tea.
Going Green, Not Just for the Environment. The green color in pistachios comes from a compound called lutein which helps to prevent the most common form of blindness – age-related macular degeneration.

Not only are they good for you, they are very tasty!
Honestly, I have never had a pistachio until about 6 months ago. We are hooked. Literally!

EVN_SB_hi-resOutstanding Heart Stats

  • Pistachios are included in the FDA’s first ever qualified health claim, approved in July 2003, which states: “Scientific evidence suggests, but does not prove, that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as pistachios, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.”

Four ways pistachios help your heart:

  • Most of the fat in pistachios – almost 90% – is “good” or unsaturated fat, which can lower blood cholesterol along with heart disease.3
  • Of all snack nuts, pistachios offer the highest level of phytosterols, and are a powerful source of fiber, both of which reduce the absorption of cholesterol from the diet4,5
  • Pistachios provide potassium. An inadequate intake of potassium is characterized by increased blood pressure and may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.6
  • Pistachios offer the second highest amount of polyphenols among nuts. Polyphenols are antioxidants with potential heart health benefits.7

Move over greasy chips, pistachios are the new snack!

This is the very interesting fact I learned from their informative website:

Pistachios are the only nut to contain a significant amount of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. The intake of these carotenoids has been associated with a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is the most common cause of irreversible blindness in Americans over 65.
