Movie Night with Roku & NetFlix: Review & Fab Giveaway!

roku_logotm_richblack

I love movies! Who doesn’t? I cannot tell you how much we spend on renting DVD’s and what a hassle it is to get everyone dressed, loaded in the van and to the movie store. It would be great if I could rent a movie online, but watch it on my TV. Wait! There IS a way this can happen. I didn’t believe it at first, until our Roku arrived. Roku is a new, fun and affordable way for you and your family to stay entertained without breaking the bank. Is the current state of the economy forcing you to curtail those movie night outings?  Do you need a way to keep the kids occupied while enjoying some “you time”?  How about a quiet and inexpensive night in? We have movie and game night every week, so you can only imagine how costly this can get. Looking back at our bank statement, I see movie rentals quite often, so as of now, this is gone, thanks to Roku and NetFlix.

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, then following Easter (tons of Family Get togethers), Mother’s Day, Father’s Day (Shall I go on?) and budgets minimal this year, many do not have the funds for their usual getaway. Instead, why not stay at home this winter and give your loved one the gift of instant, entertainment for a one-time purchase of $99.

Roku, a leading innovator in digital media technology, is providing families with a fun and affordable alternative to home entertainment.  Roku has teamed up with Netflix to offer customers the ability to instantly watch more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes, including new releases and hundreds of options in HD, streamed directly to your TV. The best part, if you are like most Netflix customers and on a Netflix Unlimited plan (any plan that costs $8.99 a month or more); there are no limits to how much you can watch instantly.

The Roku Player is surprisingly easy to use and simple to integrate into any home entertainment system. All it takes is connecting the player to any TV and to the Internet. For homes with wireless Internet connectivity, the player is Wi-Fi enabled and offers the ultimate in placement flexibility. With the player’s accompanying remote control, members can browse and make selections right on the TV screen and also have the option to pause, rewind or play anytime just like a DVD.

I wanted to show you how EASY the Roku was for me to install. It took just a few minutes to get the Roku hooked up to my television, and a few more minutes getting my NetFlix account started online. Once it was created, I logged on to NetFlix.com, added movies to  my que, then I picked up the remote to Roku, navigated through the menu and there were my movies in que. Tucker was very excited to be able to watch Scooby Doo and Caillou instantly! Check out the picture to the right so you can see how small the Roku is on our entertainment stand.

I installed Roku today, set up my NetFlix account today and we have already watched 2 movies instantly. I am VERY impressed and very excited about this product! If there was ever a gift to get someone… it is the Roku!

    Karen A. says:

With my husband out of work right now, movies and movie rentals are a luxury we are doing without. To be able to watch some newer movies and some great movies from the past would be wonderful. We’d also be thrilled to be able to watch some old tv series from the 60′s and 70′s. We are totally bored with our VHS collection as we’ve seen them all a million times it seems. Plus the VCR isn’t working quite as well as it should be. Our son bought us a DVD player for Christmas but it just gathers dust as we don’t have the spare money to buy or rent DVDs. This would be such a wonderful win for the both of us.

I would much rather watch them on my t.v., I just didn’t know how that was possible. I also love netflix, so the combination is great! I didn’t even know that this kind of thing existed, but it sounds amazing. Thanks for the great contest.

I’d be so thrilled to have Netflix-the local video rental only carries new releases and there are so many old classics I’ve been dying to see. Sadly Netflix just isn’t in the budget right now, but this would be a fun treat. Thanks for the chance.

  41. 160
    Sarah says:

Um…the last movie I saw in a theater was “Knocked Up.” My husband took a long lunch and we went to a matinee showing while our son was at daycare. This was much cheaper and more entertaining than the birth classes the hospital offered, and was our last big date (and mental preparation) before my second child arrived.

Now that baby #3 has joined us, I may never see a movie in the theater again (unless it’s something animated that I’ll pay WAY too much for and will have to leave the theater twelve times for bathroom visits/diaper changes during. How is it that they never have to go at the same time?)

I hadn’t heard of the Roku but it sounds amazing. Even attempting to watch a half-hour sitcom like The Office without interruption has been a chore. We’ve kicked around getting a DVR – but the Roku would be a more versatile option. I may finally see a TV show in it’s entirety AND maybe be able to comment on a movie that’s come out in the last five years (except for “Knocked Up” – I’ve seen that one!)

  42. 159
    Darcy B says:

We can’t really afford cable any more– I think with a roku and netflix –we could stop paying $85 a month for cable. That extra money each month would be a huge help.

  43. 158
    Erica G says:

I would love to have it because it is so hard to get out with the baby and rent movies. I also end up forgetting to take them back. This is so much better and less of a hassle! Thanks for the giveaway!

I would love the Roku because I’m tired of hooking up my computer to the television when we’re watching our Netflix movies. It makes my whole entertainment system area look messy with the cords dangling since our television is hung on the wall.. maybe I’m a perfectionist but it’s driving me insane! lol

I haven’t been to the theater to watch a movie in over a YEAR! Seriously! My husband and I love movies but his back gets really sore sitting in the chairs at the theater (or so he tells me!!). Soooooo…we watch ALL of our movies at home. If I’m not renting from the store I’m paying for the pay per view movies. It adds up quick! And I can’t believe I’ve never heard of Roku before. How cool is that? WANT!!! :-)

I would looooove Roku! Right now we use Netflix, but the kids have a tendency to hide their favorite rentals so that they can keep watching them!!! LOL! My husband is a HUGE movie buff, but now with 3 kids under the age of 5 and the nearest movie theater 30 miles away-well, we don’t get to go to many movies anymore. This would be FANTASTIC! I would LOVE the ability to choose from Netflix’s vast assortment of workout videos as well! I get so tired of working out to the same video over and over and over….and now that I am desperately trying to lose weight it would be FABULOUS to be able to have a rental store on my tv at my disposal! oooooooohhhhhh, I want one soooooo bad!!!!!!

This would be great for us – mainly for my daughter! We don’t have cable. She’s always asking to watch something that’s not on. It’s hard to explain to a 3 year old why she can’t. What we do now is check out DVDs for her from the library. This would be a lot easier than driving to the library each week. At least when we let her watch some tv, it will be something we definitely want her to see rather than whatever happens to be on at the moment. We also have an infant, so we don’t go out to see movies. Maybe (if we got them both to sleep early) my husband and I could watch something besides Caillou or Maisy.

I would love love love to win one of these for our bedroom. We do not have satellite hooked up to that room and I would love to be able to take a mommy break and curl up in bed and watch a movie. When you have twins its so hard to escape and I love Netflix. This is such a cool device and I love the wireless feature so we can hook it up to any of our televisions and get a movie for the kids. But most of all Id love to win so I can take some much needed time outs for myself, and I love to watch all the romantic comedies, and thriller movies.

I would love to have a Roku. My husband is always running out of movies to watch and it would be great so he could watch them whenever. And every time I rent a movie for myself I never get around to watching it. We just end up returning them (late) without me seeing them, so I could actually watch a movie when I want to and not have to worry about getting it back to the store on time.

But we don’t go to movies any more because we now have to think, “do we need it or just want it” before we buy things or go places. We are trying to stick with the “Need it” things in order to save money. Thanks for the chance to win this.

It’s Friday, Grandpa and Grandma have picked up big bro and princess in the afternoon. Dinner is cooking and Grandma checks the movies that came in from her online movie rental. Oh no princess didn’t come last week so she has a movie but Grandpa forgot to mail the others and big bro has already seen his movie because he was here last week…. Grandpa also watched his movie last week. Poor Grandma hasn’t had a movie she’d really likes to see in heaven knows how long. Will you please save this family with a Roku and Netflix account of their own so that princess will watch her movie, big bro will see something new and grandpa has a movie to watch when they go to bed and grandma’s on the computer…….and best of all deserving grandma will finally see all those movies everyone else calls “mushy” .

We use Netflix now, but I can’t tell you how many times we have had the same movie sitting there for several days after watching it because well we forget to put it out for the mail. Nothing like cozying up and watching a movie without leaving the house.

I have a confession to make… I am actually a superhero. Yes, I am outing myself right here on MommyGoggles. Now, not everyone truly appreicates my particular superpower, but at least I do have a cool name and ocassionally even wear tights and a cape (sweatpants and a baggy sweater are usually my superhero outfit). You can call me “Ms. Couch Potato”. After a hard day of working as my alter ego out in the “real” world, I am capable of returning to my not-so-secret lair and positioning myself on the sofa to watch movies for hours on end. My feats include personalized movie festivals with a theme (think… football movies, end of the world blow ‘em up movies, etc.) or perhaps I will focus my super senses on a particular actor for the evening (Kevin Bacon, George Clooney, Don Cheadle, Reese Witherspoon, etc.).

It would do all of humanity such a favor to award me the ROKU and Netflix membership. I would have more time to devote to my super hero practices. I would be able to avoid exposing my true identity to folks at the video rental stores. Help me keep my identity secret. Please let me win!

Oh my this would be perfect for my family. Now that we have two children we never go to the movies. If we do it is to see a movie the girls want to see. And although we have directv which offers pay per view. They limit how long you can keep the movie. I think you can keep a movie for 24 hours. Which if you have kids and work you know that might not be enough time to watch a movie. I know sad. And lets face it I barely can stay up past my kids bedtime of 8:00. You would never know I’m just 35. So I would love to win the Roku which seems like a great way for my family or just my husband and I to watch and enjoy movies. Wow we might even be able to have date night.

This would be amazing for us!! My husband and I LOVE watching movies… we rent them all the time, and up until recently it was fairly easy for us b/c we used our charter “on demand” which we could rent instantly from the tv with… but this month when the bill came in the mail I about flipped b/c our 6 month special pricing is over, and I didn’t realize how much our $3.99 movies were REALLY adding up… so I’ve looked hard into getting NetFlix, and want a way to play the movies instantly still… this would be PERFECT!!!! We love netflix. We have had netflix for almost a year now. I have already been looking at the roku because I would love to get movies directly to my tv. For some reason we go through dvd players like water. Our whole family loves watching dvds. We recently dropped getting HBO and Cinamax because it was getting too expensive. It is so much cheaper to rent the series from netflix. You can rent so many tv series that now a days you dont even need cable really. I would love the roku first because I am sick of buying new dvd players…and secondly because our mailman sucks! Yep…that is right…I know netflix can only deliver the movies as fast as they get them and send them out…but our mailman sometimes doesnt get to my house until 5pm so the movies dont go out until another day later. Then by the time they get the new one delivered it is another couple days because its later again. So I would love to have the roku so I wouldnt have those days missing…I could really take advantage of having movies here whenever.

No 5.00 for popcorn, 4.00 for a coke. Run by Wal Mart and you can have a great night with all the fixings for a couple of dollars. ahhh I lost my comment!!!!

OK, so Hubby and I are huge movie fans. We watch movies every night together. It’s kinda our thing, we love cuddling up on the couch and checking out the new movies! Of course, this also means we have to go out and rent them.. AHHHHHH as you know this can really cost a lot of money and gas! It’s already hard enough trying to find a video store that is open here in Arrowhead!

So why would I like the ROKU? Well, that is easy. Hubby and I are HUGE movie fans. We LOVE watching them and do every day. We would love to be able to save that extra money and use it for something more important… you know bills.
