What is your ‘ideal’ weight? {BMI Chart}

I have been working hard to lose weight & get fit. My PT had told me that with my 5 foot 7 inches, that I needed to get down to 115 – 120 pounds. That is entirely too small for my height and frame. It’s not only my opinion, but a fact. Do you ever wonder why there are tiny models for weight loss commercials? I have. I saw an ad the other day in a magazine for plus size clothing, yet the model was maybe 110 pounds and probably wasn’t in a size 2 clothing. Seriously? No wonder our youth has such a hard time with their complexes and why there are so many people out there with eating disorders. I am proud to say that I am down 36 pounds from where I was at in August. I have been working out, eating right, drinking plenty of water, getting the rest my body needs and taking daily vitamins. I went on a search for a BMI Weight Chart and found a chart that was more on target for my height than I have seen yet.

I am 5′ 7″, so I should be in the 122 – 149 range. I have pretty small bones and a small frame. Even for me, 122 would be entirely too small for my height and frame. I am so close to the 149 range, so  my ideal target weight {for myself} is 145-150.

There are many BMI Calculators out there where you can plug in your height and current weight. If you are working to lose weight, don’t let any BMI calculator tell your mind that you need to be a certain weight. You need to lose weight for YOU, after all, you are the one that knows your own body.

  1. I am 5’7″ too and I was around 118 for awhile- fitting into a size 5 and although that says OK by the charts I wasnt feeling very well but I just thought those charts were so right.

  2. @Kim, I agree. I feel the same way that you do. For my frame, I am 5 ft 7 in, it says I need to be 122. At my LOWEST I was 130-135 and my family thought I was doing drugs. I was so thin… too thin! I think when you are comfortable in your OWN skin – that is YOUR BMI.

  3. Wow…between 95-116?? Just wow…

  4. JoeyfromSC says:

149-183..well, I have lost about 80 lbs. total now..I’m down a couple of pants sizes and would love to even be 199.5 haha

I haven’t seen under 200 in MANY years:(

  5. @Amanda @ Confessions From HouseholdSix, Oh, for sure! There’s no way I want to be 120 pounds. I would look sickly, that’s for sure.

  6. I don’t think those charts always take into account muscle vs. fat. I know when I was in high school and very active in sports, in the fall and spring when I was “in season,” it was nothing for me to weigh about 10-15lbs more, but my clothes fit better. In winter, I weighed less, but I was squishier. The same goes for the Wii Fit. It tells my husband he should weigh what he did when he came home from Iraq. He was entirely way too skinny for his frame. I always take weight with a grain of salt.

  7. Sylvia Esparza says:

Oh my! I am 5’2″ so mine is 99-121. I have a long way to go! But I don’t think at this time in my life I could get to 121. Well we will see what my progress is after a month.

  8. Your PT is insane. I am 5’6″ and weigh 120. You would be a rail!

And I HATE BMI charts! LOL! They really are so inaccurate – as are the calculators. Those handheld monitors are the way to go. I’ve used them at the gym and they seem more accurate. The chart has me off by 3% bodyfat – and that’s a big difference.

  9. I think that is waaaay to little for you Tanya.. I think you would be gorgeous at 150. I would like to be between 155-160 even though my bmi says 126-154. I think if you like the way your clothes fit, it doesn’t matter about your weight. 😉

  10. It says 113 -138, and I’d like to be 135 to 140. Even at 150 I loved my curves

  11. @Sara Phillips, Thank you so much Sara!

  12. @Brandy, That’s how I was before I got married. I had two jobs, was running at the track every day & swimming daily, and I was going out 4-5 nights a week with my girlfriends dancing {country bars. LOL} and having fun. My family thought I was on drugs or that something was really wrong. I was super small… smaller than I was in highschool. I am comfortable where I am at, but I would love to see 15 more pounds gone by summer.

  13. wow according to BMI I need to lose 35 lbs.
I’m 5’2″,and 155 but before I had kids and I weighed like 105 everyone said I looked anorexic.

  14. Sara Phillips says:

Your chart says my “ideal weight” would be 104-127 … I would love to be on the about 110 … but I haven’t weighed that much (little) since before I got married. We have changed our eating so we make more (healthier) food at home. I need to find a workout routine, but so far, I haven’t been able to find a routine that works for me.

You are doing AWESOME!! Congrats on your loss!!
