We are a new, young family, so we are still in the workings of creating our family traditions. There are a few things that I love to do and love to make for Thanksgiving.
We travel to my in-laws every Thanksgiving, the week before, I will make a ham or small turkey for my family so that we can enjoy a small, intimate family of 4 Thanksgiving in our home. It is fun to do and so personal. In fact, I have a turkey thawing in the fridge right now to get made this weekend. After we eat, we will probably play games, but most importantly, we are enjoying our time as a family in our own home.
Another thing that I have to do for our meal, is I have to make the mashed potatoes that my grandmother makes. There’s something about her tricks that she does to the potatoes that I enjoy and it makes me feel that I am in her home, with my family for the holidays. I am from Texas, so we aren’t able to get up and go any time we want, so anything I can do to make myself feel like I am with my family, makes me so happy!
Last, but not least, who can deny grabbing a comfy blanket and cozying it up on the couch with your family while you watch the Thanksgiving Day parades on TV? I would love to go to one of the parades just once in my life, but to be able to watch these with my family, is so special to me!
What are your family traditions? I would love to hear them!

When we were in Connecticut we usually went to Bill’s sister’s house in Boston for a wonderful family dinner. I would always bring dessert, and would help her cook. We usually spent the weekend there and would go into town to see the Christmas decorations and do some shopping on Friday at Filenes Basement.
Now that we live in Florida, we don’t have any family nearby, so it is usually just the two of us and I make a turkey breast in our Ronco rotisserie. Or we just go out to eat.

Our family traditions really just comprise of being together. a TON of us at our home. Lots of extended family, everyone in the kitchen “helping.” It’s really good times and I cherish them all!

It’s nice to create your own traditions outside of your extended family – keep it up, your family will appreciate it. Enjoy the parades!

Every single Thanksgiving, after the dishes are down, bellies are stuffed…it’s me vs my dad …the wishbone battle. LOL We pull out the wishbone of the turkey and my dad and I tug on each end to see who gets the bigger half. We’ve been doing this since I can remember and somehow that man always wins.
