My main goal for yesterday’s yard sale was to start Spring Cleaning & de-clutter the house of things that we weren’t using, didn’t need and also was to save money so we can buy the kids a wooden sing/play set for our back yard. Well, we were due to start at 7am, but we started putting things around 8am yesterday. People started showing up out of now where. At one time, we had about 20 people in our driveway at once. We sold everything… let me say that again.. We sold EVERYTHING that we had in the sale, with the exception of a glider rocker with ottoman. I had $25.00 listed on it, so I went on our local sale shop, listed it at 5:00pm, I had 3 calls on it right away, and it sold. The guy is in route this morning to pick it up.
We made over $200 in the first hour, the yard sale was cleared out by 2 hours total and everything is gone! The house is still a mess from getting things cleaned up from the sale and week of prep, but overall, the sale was a success!
Here’s something that was cute & funny: Every person that walked up to the sale, Tucker said “You need to buy something so I can buy a swing set”. I did not tell him to say that, but I surely don’t think it hurt anything!
Now THAT is a successful yard sale!

Way to go!!! I would LOVE to have a garage sale where everything sold in 2 hours!

Good for you! I hope we’re *half* as successful in ours…we really need the money for vet bills, etc. We do a HUGE sale, though…so selling *everything* is probably not going to happen…a 3-car garage completely full. We set up three pairs of 8′ tables, end to end, with a “tier” over the top of each set for even more horizontal space. We have hanging rods around three sides of the interior for clothing (and it’s FULL!), a pegged pole for purses and totes. A couple of card tables filled with jewelry and more expensive or vintage-y items (there’s a problem with theft from time to time) near where we do the transactions so we can keep an eye on them. Then there’s the 4-car parking pad… More tables filled with all kinds of things, tarps spread out filled with baskets, tins, shoes, linens, toys… Furniture, larger kids’ toys, and garden things on both sides of the drive. This year the apartment upstairs is not rented, so more furniture and larger items up there.
Question: if you were at a really large garage sale that had loads of good things on the ground level, would you go upstairs to the apartment to look at even more items?

@Judith, You bet I would go upstairs for more! I have been to a couple yard sales where they had more in another room or part of their property. I LOVE yard sales, and I love knowing that the money is going to something like the kitties, a charity or even like ours where we weren’t just wanting to make cash, we are saving for something for the kids. When is your sale? I am coming to DBQ Friday night, so my friend and I can go to the city wide sale. If it’s next weekend, we can come! If you see a toy box and/or play vanity, keep me posted. I would love to buy from you since it’s going for a good cause!

That’s wonderful!! I need to have a yard sale to get some money, too. Thanks for the idea. Hopefully, whenever we have ours, it’ll be as successful.
Again, good work and congratulations!!

I’m so glad you had such success! I can’t wait to see the swingset and Tucker playing on it.
That is so adorable of Tucker to say… I’m sure that it really did help!
